Avignon - the capital of the Vaucluse department in Provence on the left bank of the Rhone, one of the most interesting cities in France - both in its beautiful location and its historical memoirs. The venue for the largest international annual theater festival.
Currently Avignon serves as the center of department management, the archbishop's residence; it houses a lyceum, higher and lower theological seminary, art, drawing and music schools, Vaucluse Academy, Botanical Garden, a museum called after its founder, Doctor Calve (Calvet), with a picture gallery, archaeological collections and galleries and architectural antiquities of the Middle Ages and modern times, in addition, a portrait gallery, a collection of coins and a cabinet of rarities, a public library of 85,000 volumes and 2,500 manuscripts, Requin Museum of Natural History, a large library art and horticulture and the society of art lovers.
